Crime Cases Surge in Rachakonda: 2024 Annual Report Reveals Alarming Trends

In a stark reminder of the growing lawlessness in our cities, the Rachakonda Police Commissionerate has released its 2024 annual report, revealing a disturbing 4% increase in overall crime compared to 2023. The report, presented by Commissioner G Sudheer Babu on Monday in December, paints a grim picture of the situation, with a sharp rise in murders, kidnappings, rape cases, and cyber crimes. The data, obtained from the commissionerate's official records, highlights the need for urgent action to stem the tide of rising crimes.

The report shows that while there was a marginal increase of 4% in the total number of cases registered in 2024, with 28,626 cases, up from 27,586 in 2023, the real concern lies in the specific categories that saw a significant spike. Murders, for instance, rose by 11% in 2024, with 73 cases reported, compared to 66 in 2023. Similarly, kidnappings increased by 10%, with 463 cases in 2024, versus 420 in 2023. The most alarming rise, however, has been in rape cases, which jumped by 17%, with 384 cases reported in 2024, compared to 327 in 2023.

But it is the surge in cyber crimes that has caught the authorities off guard. With a staggering 42.5% increase, the number of cyber crimes rose to 4,458 in 2024, from 2,563 in 2023. The most common type of cyber crime reported was false part-time job or investment opportunities, accounting for 2,125 cases, followed by phishing attacks, which accounted for 996 cases. The police also reported 143 loan app harassment cases, underscoring the need for greater vigilance in the digital space.

The report also highlights the police's efforts to combat the rising tide of crimes. Commissioner Sudheer Babu emphasized the adoption of the Visible Policing, Quick Response (VQT) strategy, which includes bicycle patrolling, as a key initiative in fighting crime. The police also claimed success in drug enforcement, arresting 521 NDPS and drug offenders, and seizing Rs 88.25 crore worth of drugs. Moreover, the police maintained surveillance over 159 drug traffickers and achieved a 76% detection rate and 64% conviction rate, the highest in Telangana for major crimes for the sixth consecutive year.

The report also points to the police's commitment to community justice, with the resolution of 11,440 compoundable cases and 70,179 petty cases through Lok Adalat programs. These initiatives demonstrate the police's attempt to engage with the community and address the root causes of crime.

However, the report also raises concerns about the effectiveness of the police's response to the rising crime wave. While the police have taken several initiatives, the numbers suggest that more needs to be done to stem the tide of crime. The 15.4% increase in crime cases cited in the query may not be reflected in the 2024 data, but it highlights the need for sustained efforts to tackle the rising crime graph.

As Commissioner Sudheer Babu acknowledged, the fight against crime is a long-term effort that requires sustained commitment from the police, the community, and the government. The 2024 annual report is a stark reminder of the challenges that lie ahead, but it also presents an opportunity for the authorities to reassess their strategies and work together to build a safer and more secure society for all.
